Student Affairs
The Student Affairs area provides leadership for the development and implementation of policies related to student life outside of the classroom.
We provide consultation and guidance to campus administrators to assist them in complying with numerous federal and state statutes and regulations, including the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), Campus Security Act, and Equity in Athletics Disclosure Act.
We also represent the system at the Legislature on issues related to students. During the recent legislative sessions these issues have included a bill on mandatory immunization for Hepatitis C, changes to the state Data Practices Act, an amendment to a statute on hazing policies, and issues related to international students.
In addition, the student affairs unit has responsibility for managing College and University Transition issues of Assessment and ELL/ESL working in a cross functional mode with P-16 Collaboration transition-related issues.
Recruitment and Retention of Underrepresented Students
The first priority in the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities Work Plan for 2002-2003 is to Increase Access and Opportunity, and to focus on the recruitment and retention of students who have been underrepresented or underserved in higher education. Each college and university will develop and begin implementation of plans to improve the recruitment, enrollment and retention of students from groups that have been underserved in higher education.
The Student Affairs Division is supporting these efforts by developing a Summary of Best Practices in the Recruitment and Retention of Underrepresented Students. Colleges and universities can review this summary to see what has worked at other institutions across the country. By adopting or adapting these activities, they can begin to develop or improve their own initiatives for recruiting and retaining underrepresented students.
